Aim

World Language Studies (ISSN: 2791-7770) is a free, international, peer-reviewed, biannual (June & December), open access journal electronically published by the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Social Sciences University of Ankara. The journal may also include special issues.

WLS aims to publish original academic articles, article translations, book introductions, and reviews written in Turkish and English, focusing on world languages, literatures, cultures, and on topics such as history, language, literature, sociology, cultural relations, language education, and applied linguistics.

Our journal accepts studies that have not been published elsewhere or are not at the stage of evaluation.

The scientific and legal responsibility of the articles, article translations, book introductions and reviews published in WLS belong to the authors. All publication rights of the published works belong to the World Language Studies and may not be published, reproduced or transferred to electronic media without the permission of the publisher.

The article should be written in Microsoft Word environment in A4 paper format.

The paper layout should be set as 2.5 cm from the left and right and 2.5 cm from the bottom.

The entire article (author information, article name, abstract, introduction, titles, conclusion, bibliography) should be written in "Times New Roman" font with 12 pt.

Abstract should be between 200 and 300 words.

For articles with a special font, the author must add the special font file to the submission file.

The first title should be written in the language in which the text is written, in 13 pt., The second heading / headings in 12 pt., All capital letters, centered and bold.

The main heading and sub-headings can be numbered up as 1., 1.1, 1.1.2,1.3, 1.4 if deemed necessary.

Tables, pictures and figures should not extend beyond the page and the in-texts should be 10 pt. and single line spacing should be used. Figures and tables should be numbered and named according to their content.

The format used for citing references is designated as APA (American Psychological Association). In the citations and the bibliography, the authors should follow the spelling rules and format specified in the American Psychological Association's Publication Guide published by the American Psychological Association. In the use of abbreviations, the rules in the Turkish Language Association Guide should be followed.

Footnotes are used only for mandatory explanations and are added through “References > Insert Footnote” command in MS Word program. The citations should be arranged in a way that includes the author's surname, publication year and page number in parentheses. Example: (Yılmaz, 2017, p.13). The work / works used in the footnote should also be included in the bibliography.

Quotations should be given in quotation marks; quotations less than five lines should be written between lines, and quotations longer than five lines should be indented 1.5 cm from the left and the right margin, in block form with 1.5 line spacing and 11 type size. References in the text should be written in parentheses.

Quotations: Direct quotations in the article should be given in quotation marks and at the end of the quotation, the source should be indicated in brackets according to APA rules.

Citation

Additional Information

Tables should have numbers and captions. In tables, vertical lines should not be used. Horizontal lines should be used only to separate the subtitles within the table. The table number should be written at the top, fully aligned to the left, and should not be in italics. The caption should be written in italics, and the first letter of each word in the caption should be capitalized. Tables should be placed where they are most appropriate in the text. Figures should be prepared in line with black-and-white printing. The numbers and captions of the figures should be centered right below the figures. The figure numbers should be written in italics followed by a full-stop. The caption should immediately follow the number. The caption should not be written in italics, and the first letter of each word should be capitalized.
Pictures should be attached to the articles scanned in high-resolution print quality. The same rules for figures and tables apply in naming pictures. The number of pages for figures, tables and pictures should not exceed 10 pages (one-third of the article).
Direct quotations should be placed in quotation marks. Quotations shorter than 2.5 lines should be placed within the flowing text. If the quotation is longer than 2.5 lines, it should be turned into a block quote with a 1.5 cm indentation on the right and left, and the font size should be 1 point smaller. Footnotes and endnotes should be avoided as much as possible. They should only be used for essential explanations and should be numbered automatically.
Citations within the text should be given in parentheses as follows:

(Gözcü, 1955, p. 15).

For a study with two authors, each reference should include the surnames of both authors.

(Al and Soydal, 2014).

When citing to publications with three, four and five authors, the surnames of all authors are given only in the first citation in the text. For other citations, the expression of others (et al) should be added next to the surname of the first author.

Example:

First citation: (Uçak, Kurbanoğlu, Şencan and Doğan, 2011), the second and later citations: (Uçak et al., 2011).

If the text already includes the name of the author, only the date should be given:

Ak (1989, p. 118), states that …

In sources and manuscripts with no publication date, only the surname of the author should be written; in encyclopedias and other sources without authors, only the name of the source should be written.

While quoting from a quotation, the original source should also be specified:

Kaplan (1938, qtd. in Oruç 1981). In Doğan’s study (qtd. in Şencan, 2010).

Personal interviews should be cited within the text by giving the surnames and dates; they should also be cited in the bibliography. Internet references should always include date of access and be cited in the bibliography.

References should be placed at the end of the text, the surnames of authors in alphabetical order. The work cited should be entered with the surname of the author placed at the beginning:
Example:

If a source has two authors, the surname of the first author should be placed first.

Example:

Kamalov, İ. and Dündar, A. M.(2008). Tarihten Bugüne Başkurtlar Tarih Dil ve Kültür Üzerine İncelemeler. Ankara: Ötüken Neşriyat.



The titles of books and journals should be italicized; article titles and book chapters should be placed in quotation marks. Page numbers need not be indicated for books. Shorter works like journals, encyclopedia entries and book chapters, however, require the indication of page numbers.

Translator’s, compiler’s and editor’s names (if there are any) should follow the author and title of the work:

Example:

Izutsu, T. (1964). Kuran’da Allah ve İnsan. (Trans. Süleyman Ateş). İstanbul: Pınar Publishing.



If several references by the same author written in the same need to be cited, it should presented as (a, b)

Example:

Pala, İ. (2015a). Kırk Güzeller Çeşmesi. İstanbul: Kapı Yay.

Pala, İ. (2015b). Efsane Güzeller. İstanbul: Kitabevi.



For encyclopedia entries, if the author of the encyclopedia entry is known, the author’s surname and name are written first. These are followed by the date of the entry, the title of the entry in quotation marks, the full name of the encyclopedia, its volume number, place of publication, publisher and page numbers:

For theses and dissertations, the following order should be followed: surname and name of the author, date, full title of thesis in italics, thesis type, city where the university is located, and the name of the university:

Ethical Principles and Publication Policy

WLS is an international refereed journal in which high quality original scientific articles, article translations, book promotions and reviews in the fields of language, literature, history of literature, culture, language education, applied linguistics are published in line with the ethical principles stated below. The articles submitted to our journal are published electronically with free access, following the evaluation of double-blind review. The following ethical principles and rules have been prepared in accordance with the Higher Education Institutions Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Directive and the Committee on Publication Ethics-COPE Publication Ethics Committee Directive.

Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

The subjects of the articles to be sent to our journal must be within the scope of specified fields.
Articles to be sent to our journal must be original, not previously published elsewhere, or not in the process of being evaluated in another journal for publication.
All sources used in the article should be properly indicated in the references; copyright materials must be used in accordance with copy laws and agreements and the required permissions.
In the Copyright Agreement Form, it should be officially stated that the name order of the articles with two or more authors have been jointly decided by all authors and that the authors accept the copyrights of the articles whose publication is finalized have been transferred to the journal.
If the authors detect an error in their article later, they should immediately inform the editorial board and should cooperate in the the correction or withdrawal process. The entire responsibility of the published article belongs to the authors. No opinion and thought in the article can be related to the journal, editors, or referees.
The similarity rate of all studies accepted by our journal is checked through the iThenticate plagiarism detection program. The matches in the plagiarism checking process are examined and then a similarity report is created for the article. In accordance with the report, the study may be completely removed from the publication process or the authors may be asked to make corrections regarding certain parts of their work.
Manuscripts go into the process of double blind evaluation by the editor or one of the assistant editors and at least two referees. Plagiarism, forgery, distortion, duplication, slicing publication (also known as Salami Slicing publication), unfair authorship, violation of copyrights and concealing conflict of interest are considered unethical behaviors.


Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers

The double blind method is used in the evaluation of the studies submitted to our journal. Thus, the identity information of the referees and authors is kept confidential in order to ensure a neutral, objective and independent evaluation process.
The articles are sent to the referees for evaluation through the journal management system established through the web page of the Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​https://ydf.asbu.edu.tr/.
Referees are required to referee the work related to their area of ​​expertise solely.
The referees should state their opinions about the article they reviewed, their decisions on whether the study is publishable or not, and should not indicate their names in order not to harm the double-blind evaluation process.
Referees are responsible for evaluating the articles scientifically in a neutral and objective manner.
Referees are expected to complete their evaluations within the time given to them and to act in accordance with the ethical principles of our journal.


Ethical Duties and Responsibilities of Editors



• Editors organize double-blind peer review process fairly and objectively by evaluating the articles submitted to the journal in line with scientific and ethical principles.

• They ensure that all information and data regarding the articles submitted to the journal are kept confidential until the completetion of the article publishing process.

• They are responsible for the total quality of all content and publications in the journal. They can publish an error page or make corrections when necessary.

• Editors do not allow any conflict of interest between authors and reviewers. They are fully authorized to appoint referees and are responsible for making the final decision on the articles to be published in the journal.


Ethics Committee Approval


In studies requiring Ethics Committee Approval, the authors acknowledge that they have carried out their studies in accordance with the relevant principles of the scientific research protocol in line with the relevant legislation and obligations; and in the part of the article regarding the research method, they must also state that they have received the Informed Consent Form from the ethics committees of the institutions and the people who participated in the study.

• Any kind of research conducted with qualitative or quantitative methods that require data collection from participants such as questionnaires, interviews, focus group interviews require ethics committee approval.

• In case of using scales, questionnaires and photographs belonging to others, permission should be obtained from the owners and this should be stated in the article.

• If authors use copyrighted intellectual and artistic works whose property rights belong to third parties or organizations, they must present the permission for use in their articles.

WLS implements the open access policy. Scientific articles published in our journal are offered to users free of charge without financial, legal and technical obstacles in accordance with the principle of making information accessible to everyone.

Loti'yi Anlamak - Pierre Loti'nin Doğusu (2011), Japonya’da Türk İmgesinin Oluşumu (2014), Yerleşik Yabancı Pierre Loti (Gözden geçirilmiş yeni baskı, 2018) adlı inceleme kitapları ile Maruko’nun Yolculuğu (2019) adlı çocuk kitabı ve Dağın Rüyası (2022) adlı romanın yazarıdır. Haruki Murakami başta olmak üzere Kenzaburo Oe, Yukio Mishima, Natsuko Imamura, Mieko Kawakami'nin eserlerini çevirdi. En Sevilen Japon Masalları (2022) seçkisini hazırladı. Edebiyat dergilerinde özgün haikuları ile Matsuo Basho ve Taneda Santoka’dan yaptığı çeviriler yayımlanmıştır. I. Boğaziçi Kitap Fuarı Haiku Yarışması Mansiyon Ödülü (2010), Japonya Dışişleri Bakanı Ödülü (2020), Kitap Dergisi Yılın Çeviri Kitabı Ödülü (2023) (Haruki Murakami Sözlüğü) ve Talât Sait Halman Çeviri Ödülü (2024) (Kenzaburo Oe, Suda Ölüm) sahibidir.

1972 yılında Ankara’da doğdu. 1994 Haziranında Ankara Üniversitesi Dil-Tarih Coğrafya Fakültesi Kore Dili ve Edebiyatı Anabilim Dalından mezun olduktan sonra Kasım ayında mezun olduğu bölümde araştırma görevlisi olarak göreve başladı. 1995 yılında Kore Hükümetinin yüksek lisans bursunu alarak Kore’ye gitti. 1996-1999 yılları arasından Ulusal Seul Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi Kore Dili Eğitimi bölümünde yüksek lisans programını tamamladı. Kesintisiz olarak 1999 yılında aynı bölümde doktora programına başladı.
2004 Şubatında doktora programından mezun olup doktora derecesi alarak Türkiye’ye döndü. 2004–2006 yılları arasında Ankara Üniversitesi Dil-Tarih Coğrafya Fakültesi Kore Dili ve Edebiyatı Anabilim Dalında araştırma görevlisi olarak görev yaptıktan sonra 16 Mayıs 2006’da Erciyes Üniversitesine yardımcı doçent olarak geçiş yaptı. 2010 yılında doçent, 2015 yılında profesörlük unvanı aldı.
9 Ekim 1997 tarihinde Kore, Yonsei Üniversitesi tarafından düzenlenen ‘6. Yabancılar Arası Korece Şiir ve Kompozisyon Yarışması’, şiir dalında büyük ödül kazandı. 9 Ekim 2012 tarihinde Kore Hükümeti tarafından Kore Dilinin gelişimi ve tanıtımına katkıda bulunanlara verilen Kore Devletbaşkanı Nişanını aldı. 'Gümüş Somon'un Büyük Yolculuğu' adlı çevirisiyle 2017 yılında Kore Edebiyat Çeviri Enstitüsünün verdiği 'En İyi Çeviri' ödülüne layık görüldü.
Halen Kore Erciyes Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Kore Dili ve Edebiyatı Anabilim Dalı başkanlığını yürütmektedir. Aynı zamanda ERÜ Avrasya Kore Araştırmaları Merkezi müdürlüğü yapmaktadır.
Kore dili eğitmenliği, araştırmacılığın yanı sıra edebiyat çevirileri de yapmaktadır.

Yiğit Sümbül was born in Tarsus in 1990. He received his B.A. (2008-2012) from Hacettepe University’s Department of English Language and Literature. He was appointed as research assistant to Erciyes University's Department of English Language and Literature where he completed his M.A. (2012-2014) with a comparative thesis on modernist works of James Joyce and Oğuz Atay. He worked as a research assistant (2014-2018) at Gazi University's Department of English Language and Literature and completed his Ph.D. (2014-2018) at Ankara University's Department of English Language and Literature with a dissertation on selected plays of Howard Barker. He received his second B.A. degree (2014-2018) from İstanbul University's Department of Philosophy, his second M.A. degree (2018-2021) from Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University's Department of Philosophy, and his second PhD degree (2021-2025) from Ankara University's Department of Philosophy. He conducted post-doctoral research (October 2019-October 2020) at University of Southampton on contemporary British drama and doctoral research at Trinity College Dublin’s Department of Philosophy (February-August 2024). He received his associate professorship from the Turkish Interuniversity Board in 2023 and has been working as an associate professor at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University's Department of English Language and Literature ever since. His research and teaching span all periods of English Literature and Philosophy with a focus on contemporary English drama, contemporary English poetry, comparative literature and contemporary continental philosophy.

Türkan Olcay is a Doctor of Philological Sciences (2002) and Full Professor (2012) at the Department of Russian Language and Literature at Istanbul University where she delivers courses on 19th-Century Russian Literature since 1994 and mentors master’s and doctoral students. She has also taught as a visiting professor at Anadolu University (Türkiye), L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Kazakhstan), Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” (Bulgaria), Masaryk University (Czech Republic) and Jagiellonian University (Poland).
Prof. Dr. Olcay’s fields of specialization are 19th-Century Russian literature and Turkish-Russian cultural and literary relations, as well as the life and socio-cultural activities of the Russian immigrants (known as "White Russians") in Istanbul in the 1920’s. She has participated in many conferences, has authored five books and has written numerous publications including over hundred articles and book chapters. She is the editor-in-chief of the collective works “Russkaya belaya emigratsiya v Turtsii vek spustya 1919-2019” [Russian White Immigration in Turkey: a Century Later 1919-2019”], Moscow: A. Solzhenitsyn House of Russia Abroad, 2019 (in Russian) and “Beyaz Rusların Gelibolu Gurbetinin 100. Yıldönümü” [The 100th Anniversary of the White Russians’ Exile in Gallipoli], Chanakkale: COMU, 2020 (in Turkish).
Prof. Dr. Olcay has been carring out institutional and departamental administrative duties, serving on the editorial boards of leading international journals and is a member of the Expert Council of the Center for Turkish-Russian Cooperation in the field of research and practice TURUSIA at Chanakkale 18 March University.

Filmi Perspektifiyle Uygulamalı Rusça Derslerinde Türk Öğrencilere Dil ve Kültür Yeterliliği Kazandırma” (Формирование лингвокультурологической компетенции турецких учащихся на практических занятиях русского языка на материале фильма «Москва, я люблю тебя») üzerine, doktora tezini ise “Rus ve Türk Dilleri Materyallerinde Doğa-Peyzaj Kod Kültürü” (Природно-ландшафтный код культуры на материале русского и турецкого языков) üzerine yazdı. 2012 yılından beri Anadolu Üniversitesi Rus Dili ve Edebiyatı bölümünde öğretim üyesi olarak çalışmaktadır. Ağırlıklı olarak Türk, Slav ve Rus dilleri, kültürleri ile mitolojileri üzerine karşılaştırmaları çalışmaları bulunmaktadır. Araştırmacının ilgilendiği bilim alanları arasında dil bilimi, kültür dilbilimi, bilişsel dilbilimi, anlam bilimi, kültür tarihi ve halk bilimi yer almaktadır.
